El software Octave se originó cerca de 1988 como parte de un libro de sobre diseño de reactores químicos, escrito por James B. Rawlings de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison y John G. Ekerdt de la Universidad de Texas.

En principio se pensó hacer solamente una herramienta para resolver problemas de diseño de reactores , pero luego se fue convirtiendo en una herramienta mucho más flexible. Actualmente se podría decir que constituye una especie de clon de Matlab, con librerías muy extensas para cálculo numérico, realización de gráficas, álgebra lineal, solución de ecuaciones diferenciales, etcétera. A diferencia de los paquetes comerciales, Octave es gratuito y se distribuye bajo la licencia GNU, GPL (General Public License).
